Bird/Bat/Owl Walk

  • Chehalis River Discovery Trail 1545 Goodrich Road Centralia, WA (map)

During this free community hike, join CRBLT & Firecraft Northwest to meander the open fields, riverbanks & forests of Discovery Trail — a wildlife hotspot! Early in the walk, we’ll look and listen for a variety of birds, learning some foundational concepts of bird identification. Then, as dusk sets in, we’ll search for owls & their signs, while learning about the various species of owls in our region. If we’re lucky, we may also see bats & discuss bat behavior, their habitats, & the species that visit our area.

We’ll cover about 1.5-2 miles, depending on what we hear & see. Generally, these walks are very slow. The trail is an out & back, mostly on flat mowed grass or dirt.

Participants:

  • Please complete the Registration information below.

  • Dress for the weather - including an extra layer as temps drop as we approach dusk. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

  • Bring water & snacks if desired.

  • Binoculars will be useful if you have them — we will also have some to borrow.

  • Field guides/note pads (options for additional study).

  • Download the Merlin birding app (not necessary, but it’s free & a great resource!

  • There’s a portable toilet at the parking area next to the Water Treatment Plant.

Parking/Directions/Where to Meet:

From Harrison Avenue in Centralia, turn onto Goodrich Road. Follow Goodrich Road & drive past the Water Treatment Plant (on your right). Continue driving towards the gate that approaches the trail.
