Restoration Continues on the Discovery Trail
The Chehalis River Basin Land Trust (CRBLT) and the Chehalis Basin Education Consortium (CBEC) regularly organize restoration activities. In early December 2010 over 300 people helped to plant trees
and shrubs in the riparian zone at the north end of the Discovery Trail.
The weather was often cold, rainy, and windy; the mud was slippery
sticky but the kids were up the challenge. The volunteers were students from 4th through 12th grades with their teachers, and citizen
volunteers. Their enthusiasm and hard work under adverse weather conditions is an inspiration to all. And the resident bald eagles kept a close watch on all.
December was chosen because the plants thrive in the months of rain as their roots adjust to new conditions and the top portion still lies in dormancy. We are now hoping that the rains do not become floods!
Funds for the project were provided by grants from the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service. Planting native trees where they should be growing is a powerful way to achieve many
environmental goals: 1.Protect streams, rivers and wetlands from erosion, sedimentation, habitat destruction, excessive heat, etc., 2.Restore valuable wildlife habitat, 3. Provide for future carbon storage, helping to combat global warming, and 4. Protect adjacent lands from flooding and land damage that often accompanies flooding

The lovely summer weather of Friday, August 20, 2010 was perfect for our
annual meeting and fundraising picnic at the Discovery Trail. The tables were
bright with color, the BBQs were hot and the food was great!
The silent auction tables were a busy spot all evening. Entertainment by "Who Are Those Guys" was wonderful and they led a river-focused sing-along to close our evening.
